Fade Fernando’s Picks From God 7.31.2020
The NBA returned last night (without Lou Williams and his infamous wings) which means sports are almost all the way back. Last week my picks went 1-2 but I have a great feeling about this weekend’s action. We have a full slate of weekend games to choose from so without further ado here are my Fade Fernando’s Picks from God©.
Friday July 31, 2020:
Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees OVER 10.5
The Yankees return to the Bronx for the first time this season to take on their longtime rivals and runs should be plentiful in this one. Ryan Weber and his 14.73 ERA will face off against Yankees lefty Jordan Montgomery who makes his first start of the campaign. While the Yankees don’t have much experience against Weber, the Red Sox have hit Montgomery pretty well in recent years. Yes, 11 is a lot of runs to score but I like our chances with the short porch in right and two pitchers who aren’t exactly considered top of the line.
New York Mets vs. Atlanta Braves (Moneyline)
The Braves took 2 of 3 from the Mets on the road at Citi Field a week ago and should start this series off with a win as they look to tee off of Mets’ pitcher Rick Porcello again. In last week’s matchup, the Braves tagged Porcello with 7 runs on 7 hits forcing him to leave the game after only 2 innings. The Braves will counter with Sean Newcomb who threw 3 1/3 innings against the Mets last week as he gave up only one run. Sportsbooks are giving the Braves on the Moneyline for -131 and it is a relatively smart bet based on the results from last weekend. Don’t over think this; take the Braves.
Houston Rockets vs. Dallas Mavericks (-1.5)
These two foes meet in the Sunshine State to continue their rivalry and this is one of the most intriguing games of the weekend. The two teams split their previous times out this season. Both offenses feature tremendous firepower as there should be plenty of points scored on both sides. This game started as a “PK” but bettors have taken the Mavs forcing the books to shift the odds. Before the virus stopped play 4 months ago, the Rockets were in the midst of their “smallball” experiment. The Mavericks and 7’3 center Kristaps Porzingis could be a matchup nightmare for the Rockets, and is the reason I like the Mavs to not only emerge victorious but to also cover the spread.
Saturday August 1, 2020:
New Orleans Pelicans (+5) vs. Los Angeles Clippers
Both teams played and lost 2 closely contested games last night in the NBA’s return in the bubble. This line opened up at Pelicans +5.5 but bettors quickly bet that number down. While the Clippers are 2-1 against the Pelicans this year, the matchups have been very close. This time around should be no different. Both teams rank in the top 5 in points per game (ppg) and team rebounding. The Pelicans match up fairly well with the Clippers so take Zion and the underdogs in this one.
